Faux Barbecue at Smokey Joe’s Restaurant

Check out the spread

Smokey Joe’s Restaurant wants you to believe that it’s a barbecue restaurant, a popular clique to be part of in Lexington. The only problem is that Smokey Joe’s is anything but a barbecue restaurant. Driving up I immediately saw that Smokey Joe’s looked more like a late-night diner than a traditional barbecue restaurant. Walking in, the wood paneling, carpeting, and tchotchkes scream living room decor not barbecue eatery.

Kerley’s: Great Barbeque at a Bargain Price

A curly-haired pig welcomes you to Kerley's

Late one recent afternoon, Cindia and I took a trip out to Kerley’s Barbecue, a Lexington staple since the seventies. Some decent barbecue, fantastic hushpuppies, and an overall good, filling meal were the result.

Speedy’s Speedy Service, Tasteless BBQ

Best BBQ Anywhere? Maybe not.

On their sign off Old Highway 52, Speedy’s boasts that it’s the “best BBQ anywhere.” But while it is homey and served with a smile, the quality of the food doesn’t quite live up to this claim.

A Smiley’s Experience

From the “Sound Horn for Service” sign on the oversized outdoor menu to the cleaver-wielding fiberglass pig beckoning from the doorway, Smiley’s on Winston Road is the quintessential Lexington barbecue restaurant.

Curbside service menu at Smiley's

Despite the clear instructions for curb service, my significant other and I chose to go inside and sit in the main dining room when we visited the well-known establishment for the very first time last week – we’re both native Lexingtonians but, as Cindia said in her post on Lexington Style Trimmings, everyone has their Q joint of choice and Lexington Barbecue is ours.

Barbecue with Style

The Spread

On Sunday, Zachary and I got a chance to check out Lexington Style Trimmings, or LST. Back in May 2010 we wrote a little piece about a restaurant Henry James Family Dining. If you didn’t get a chance to check it out I’ll sum up the experience for you: It sucked. Anyways, we were left a comment by Stephen Lynch that LST was one of the best BBQ places in town. We got some follow up commentary that agreed and there was mention of amazing hushpuppies. Stephen said if we weren’t satisfied with our food, then lunch was on him. I’m happy to report that Stephen, you can keep your money.

Henry James Family Dining, or How I ate BBQ and vomited

Henry James Family Dining

Henry James restaurant located here in Lexington. Watch out, there is a second location off of HWY 150.

In my time in Lexington, and in conversations I’ve had regarding BBQ, I’ve come to realize that several people believe that all Lexington BBQ is created equally; therefore, all Lexington BBQ taste pretty much the same. This narrow view is shared by many and these people are just misinformed. Case in point, Henry James Family Dining, a restaurant located on Talbert Boulevard in Lexington. From the outside, Henry James looks like an old Taco Bell that’s been remodeled; inside it’s reminiscent of a Shoney’s with a fast food counter. The place is unsuspecting, and when you take your seat you’d never know how sinister the restaurant really is.
