Late one recent afternoon, Cindia and I took a trip out to Kerley’s Barbecue, a Lexington staple since the seventies. Some decent barbecue, fantastic hushpuppies, and an overall good, filling meal were the result.

I have to admit that whenever I hear the word “buffet” in relation to a meal I am about to eat, I get a little closed-minded.
I picture small children reaching unwashed hands into bins of nearly-congealed food, sneezing under the sneeze guards and running unaccompanied down narrow aisles with plates piled too high. I picture flies. Lots and lots of flies.
The Butter Bean Buffet was different.
From the “Sound Horn for Service” sign on the oversized outdoor menu to the cleaver-wielding fiberglass pig beckoning from the doorway, Smiley’s on Winston Road is the quintessential Lexington barbecue restaurant.
Despite the clear instructions for curb service, my significant other and I chose to go inside and sit in the main dining room when we visited the well-known establishment for the very first time last week – we’re both native Lexingtonians but, as Cindia said in her post on Lexington Style Trimmings, everyone has their Q joint of choice and Lexington Barbecue is ours.
Many in the area are familiar with the Dixie Classic Fair, which will be over in a few days. I had the pleasure of going yesterday to that fair. There were lots of rides and lots to see and eat. It’s a great fair, but my fair season starts with the Davidson County Agriculture Fair in Lexington, NC. It took place this year September 20 thru 25, and don’t worry if you missed it because it comes back with a vengeance every year.
