Speedy’s Speedy Service, Tasteless BBQ

Best BBQ Anywhere? Maybe not.

On their sign off Old Highway 52, Speedy’s boasts that it’s the “best BBQ anywhere.” But while it is homey and served with a smile, the quality of the food doesn’t quite live up to this claim.

A Smiley’s Experience

From the “Sound Horn for Service” sign on the oversized outdoor menu to the cleaver-wielding fiberglass pig beckoning from the doorway, Smiley’s on Winston Road is the quintessential Lexington barbecue restaurant.

Curbside service menu at Smiley's

Despite the clear instructions for curb service, my significant other and I chose to go inside and sit in the main dining room when we visited the well-known establishment for the very first time last week – we’re both native Lexingtonians but, as Cindia said in her post on Lexington Style Trimmings, everyone has their Q joint of choice and Lexington Barbecue is ours.

Barbecue with Style

The Spread

On Sunday, Zachary and I got a chance to check out Lexington Style Trimmings, or LST. Back in May 2010 we wrote a little piece about a restaurant Henry James Family Dining. If you didn’t get a chance to check it out I’ll sum up the experience for you: It sucked. Anyways, we were left a comment by Stephen Lynch that LST was one of the best BBQ places in town. We got some follow up commentary that agreed and there was mention of amazing hushpuppies. Stephen said if we weren’t satisfied with our food, then lunch was on him. I’m happy to report that Stephen, you can keep your money.

Tea Time At the Lexington Tea House

This is going to sound girlie, but I really love tea parties. When I was a little girl you couldn’t have paid me to sit down, drink tea, play with dolls. Gross. But now that I’m grown I just love the pomp and circumstance of afternoon tea.

Tea Trays with Food

If you’ve never tried it, you are in luck. In our very own town we have a beautiful tea house called the Lexington Tea House. The location has been used as a tea room before, but the current owners have been there for 2 years.

I had the time of my life at the Davidson County Agricultural Fair

Speckled Llama

This year there was a speckled llama, donkeys, and a giant turkey. Oh my!

Fair time is here again!

Many in the area are familiar with the Dixie Classic Fair, which will be over in a few days. I had the pleasure of going yesterday to that fair. There were lots of rides and lots to see and eat. It’s a great fair, but my fair season starts with the Davidson County Agriculture Fair in Lexington, NC. It took place this year September 20 thru 25, and don’t worry if you missed it because it comes back with a vengeance every year.

The Bar-B-Q Center

Bar-B-Q Center

The Bar-B-Q Center all lit up and visible from Main St., Lexington

Along Interstate 85 like a lit beacon is the neon sign for the Bar-B-Q Center, which welcomes travelers and locals alike to come in and enjoy some of the barbeque Lexington, NC has to offer. The restaurant is the first of such eateries found along the streets of Lexington, and in my opinion, is a great place to start when looking for good barbeque. I remember coming here as a child, and always having fond memories of the food, especially their famed banana splits; so it was with great enthusiasm that I agreed to go with my fiance to review the restaurant. Since the theme of this blog so far has been barbeque, we only sampled their sliced plate and chopped sandwich (sorry, no banana splits this time.)
